We're ecosystem connectors, building a network cloud to power your unique advantage.

From the emerging (AI and intelligence) to the mundane (privacy and compliance) to the existential (security and control), we believe that networks, connections and the movement and control of data is foundational to the success of every important business.

Unfortunately, available solutions are often a black box of proprietary services rooted in an age before deployable software was the norm - with a limited surface area for innovation.

Network and edge capabilities, although critical to your product, software and business success often lie in a silo in a 3rd party CDN, a telco or a network team you can't control, integrate deeply into your innovation cycle or take with you to private or custom locations.

So why not build your own network cloud the way you'd build and deploy apps? The answer is that its just too...darn...hard!

At Datum, we're on a mission to change that by unlocking a better way for technology providers and consumers to connect with the advantages that help them win.

To make it happen, we're building an open network cloud that you can run anywhere — on our managed global infrastructure or with native federation to locations you control in public or private clouds.

We're building that value in the open under a AGPL v3 license and treating partner technologies as key ingredients to the equation.

  • We’re focused on data and network latency sensitive workloads that run in software, so our first effort is to provide a global runtime built for service provider operability with the "creature comforts" of access, observability, integrations and operations built into a robust cloud control plane.
  • We’re building features to help folks programmatically leverage superpowers like global backbones, deterministic routing, private interconnection, large infrastructure footprints and more. Think super human networking powers for the average joe.
  • We’re baking technology partners and their commercial models into our platform from the start so you don't have to choose between a closed network cloud that 'just works' and an open DIY toolkit you have to hand craft at every step of the journey.
  • We expect to launch our initial set of cloud services in 2025 and leverage a federated model for infrastructure that allows customers to control more of their environment while we launch scaled capacity in our managed cloud. Our focus is on open source contributors, technology partners, and early design customers.

Who is Datum for?
While we will provide a developer-led experience, as a business we’re 100% focused on the challenges and opportunities of scale. If you’re building a modern distributed cloud business, we would love to talk.
What makes Datum special?
We believe our biggest differentiators include a focus on service provider use cases; a commercial model that treats partner success as a first principle; and a strategy  built around connecting ecosystems.

Oh, and a team that has spent 20 years building and running infrastructure platforms and sees Datum as their life’s work.
Are you an AI company?
We’re big believers in a future that combines specialized software with specialized hardware, but we don’t love buzzwords. We’re internet plumbers, and we think our job is to make technology easier to deploy, connect, operate, and scale.
How is Datum funded?
Datum is  funded by its co-founders, Zac and Jacob Smith, with support from a small group of angels and visionary venture funds.
Why this, why now?
At Equinix, Zac and Jacob observed the power of a magnetic ecosystem built around networks, but saw how difficult it was for new providers to participate. With Datum, we want to help thousands of companies benefit from that kind of network ecosystem value.
What else are you building?
We’re building something called Datum OS, which is a “soup to nuts” platform for running product-led B2B businesses like ours. We plan to make it open source soon and we’d love to work with you on it.
